Origin: Meta River basin, Colombia (tributary of the Orinoco River)
Adult Size: Males ~7–8 cm (3 in), females ~5 cm (2 in)
Lifespan: ~5 years
Temperament: Peaceful to mildly territorial (especially during breeding)
Minimum Tank Size: 20 gal long for a pair (larger for a community or harem)
Layout:
Plenty of hiding spots (driftwood, caves, coconut shells, flower pots)
Leaf litter for natural feel and tannins
Open swimming space at the front
Plants: Fine-leaved or floating plants help reduce stress
Substrate: Fine sand is best for digging and sifting
Temperature: 24–28 °C (75–82 °F)
pH: 6.0–7.2 (slightly acidic to neutral; softer water preferred for breeding)
Suitable with peaceful small fish (tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, Corydoras)
Avoid large/aggressive cichlids and fin-nippers
Males can be territorial; best kept as pairs or harems (1 male with 2–3 females) in larger setups
