Betta Antuta
Scientific Name: Betta sp. ‘Antuta’
Common Names: Antuta Betta, Bulungan Betta, Turquoise Dragon Betta
Family: Osphronemidae
Origin: Southeast Asia (Bulungan Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia; clear, flowing highland streams)
Size: 4–6 inches (10–15 cm); males larger with more vibrant colors
Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care
Behavior: Territorial and moderately aggressive, especially males. Thrives as a single specimen or in pairs (male and female) in a species-only tank. Males may flare or chase to defend territory, and they are known jumpers, requiring a secure lid.
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C); avoid prolonged exposure above 82°F.
pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
Tank Requirements: Minimum 20 gallons (75 liters) for a single fish or pair; 40 gallons or more for a group with one male. Use a fine gravel or sand substrate, driftwood, rocks, and leaf litter (e.g., Indian almond leaves) for cover. Include robust plants (e.g., Anubias, Java Fern) and dim lighting to mimic their natural habitat. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping.
Compatible with peaceful, larger tetras in larger tanks. Avoid other bettas, long-finned fish, or small shrimp, as they may be eaten due to the Antuta’s large mouth. Best kept in a species-only tank to minimize aggression.
