Congochromis Sabinae
Scientific Name: Congochromis sabinae
Common Names: Sabinae Chromis, Nanochromis sabinae
Family: Cichlidae
Origin: Central Africa (Sangha, Alima, and Likouala drainages in Republic of Congo; Upper Ogooué system in Gabon; Lukenie basin in Democratic Republic of Congo; forested streams and rivers)
Size: Males 2.1 inches (5.3 cm); females 1.5 inches (3.9 cm)
Lifespan: 5–8 years with proper care
Behavior: Moderately peaceful but slightly territorial, especially during breeding. Thrives as a monogamous pair or in small groups of 5–6 with one male and multiple females to reduce aggression. Males and females form strong pair bonds, with both parents guarding fry.
Temperature: 73–79°F (23–26°C); avoid prolonged exposure above 84°F (29°C).
pH: 4.5–6.0 (highly acidic; prefers blackwater conditions).
Tank Requirements: Minimum 30 gallons (113 liters) for a pair; 80 gallons or more for a group. Use a fine sand substrate to support their digging behavior, with leaf litter (e.g., Indian almond leaves), driftwood, and caves (e.g., coconut shells or clay pots) for hiding and spawning. Include robust plants (e.g., Anubias, Java Fern) and floating plants to create a shaded, blackwater environment.
Compatible with peaceful nano fish like Pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.), small tetras, or Dwarf Corydoras. Avoid aggressive cichlids, large fish, or other bottom-dwellers to prevent competition. Safe with larger shrimp (e.g., Amano Shrimp) in planted tanks, though shrimplets may be eaten.
