Origin: Orinoco River basin (Venezuela, Colombia) and parts of the Rio Negro basin
Adult Size: 12–15 cm (5–6 inches)
Lifespan: ~8–10 years with good care
Temperament: Peaceful, shy — best with gentle tankmates
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gal for a small group (75+ gal preferred)
Substrate: Fine sand (they sift sand through their gills for food)
Décor: Driftwood, smooth rocks, leaf litter; open swimming space
Plants: Can work if hardy and well-rooted; they may uproot when foraging
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate
Temperature: 25–29 °C (77–84 °F)
pH: 5.5–7.0 (soft, acidic to neutral)
