Origin: Rio Negro basin, Brazil (blackwater systems)
Adult Size: ~12–15 cm (5–6 in)
Lifespan: ~8–10 years
Temperament: Peaceful; social, best kept in groups
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gal (group of 5–6)
Layout:
Fine sand substrate (constant sifting behavior)
Driftwood and leaf litter for tannins
Open swimming space with some structure
Dim lighting preferred

Essential: Fine sand

Temperature: 26–30 °C (79–86 °F)
pH: 4.5–6.5 (soft, acidic blackwater preferred)
Tankmates:
Peaceful species (tetras, pencilfish, other Geophagus, dwarf cichlids)
Avoid aggressive or overly active fish

Notes:
Classic eartheater behavior—constantly sifting sand
Best colors and behavior in soft, acidic water
Omnivorous: quality pellets, frozen, and live foods
Sensitive to poor water quality—needs stable, clean conditions
