Plakat Betta
Scientific Name: Betta splendens (Plakat strain)
Common Names: Plakat Betta, Short-Fin Betta, Thai Fighting Fish
Family: Osphronemidae
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam; slow-moving waters, rice paddies, and swamps)
Size: 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm); males slightly larger with more vibrant colors
Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care
Behavior: Territorial and aggressive, especially males. Thrives as a single specimen or in pairs (male and female) in a species-only tank. Males may flare or display to defend territory and are prone to jumping, requiring a secure lid.
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C); avoid prolonged exposure below 74°F or above 86°F.
pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
Tank Requirements: Minimum 5 gallons (19 liters) for a single fish; 20 gallons or more for a pair or community with careful selection. Use a smooth gravel or sand substrate, driftwood, and leaf litter (e.g., Indian almond leaves) for cover. Include robust plants (e.g., Anubias, Java Fern) and dim lighting to mimic their natural habitat. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping.
Compatible with peaceful, non-fin-nipping tetras, or corydoras in larger tanks (20 gallons or more). Avoid other bettas, long-finned fish, or small shrimp, as they may be eaten or harassed. Best kept in a species-only tank to minimize aggression.
