Scientific Name: Pterophyllum scalare (Red Spot strain)
Common Names: Red Spot Angelfish, Freshwater Angelfish
Family: Cichlidae
Origin: South America (Amazon River basin, including Peru, Colombia, Brazil; slow-moving rivers and floodplains)
Size: 6 inches (15 cm) body length, up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall with fins; males and females similar in size
Lifespan: 8–12 years with proper care

Behavior: Peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. Thrives in groups of 4–6 to establish a social hierarchy and reduce aggression. Males and females form monogamous pairs during spawning.

Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C); avoid prolonged exposure below 74°F or above 86°F.
pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).

Tank Requirements: Minimum 30 gallons (113 liters) for a pair; 55 gallons or more for a group. Use a fine gravel or sand substrate with driftwood, rocks, and tall plants (e.g., Amazon Sword, Vallisneria) to mimic their natural habitat. Provide open swimming space and vertical structures for territory. Moderate lighting enhances their red spot coloration.

Compatible with peaceful fish like tetras (e.g., Neon Tetra), rasboras, corydoras, or other non-aggressive cichlids. Avoid fin-nipping fish (e.g., barbs) or small shrimp, as they may be eaten. Safe with larger shrimp (e.g., Amano Shrimp) in planted tanks.
