Splendid Kribensis
Scientific Name: Nanochromis splendens
Common Names: Splendid Krib, Kribensis Splendid, Jewel of Africa
Family: Cichlidae
Origin: West Africa (Lower Ogooué River, Gabon; slow-moving rivers and forested streams)
Size: Males 3.5 inches (9 cm); females 2.8 inches (7 cm)
Lifespan: 5–8 years with proper care
Behavior: Moderately peaceful but territorial, especially during breeding. Thrives as a single pair or in small groups with one male and multiple females to reduce aggression. Males display vibrant colors during courtship, while females guard fry closely
Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C); avoid prolonged exposure above 82°F.
pH: 5.5–7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral).
Tank Requirements: Minimum 20 gallons (75 liters) for a pair; 40 gallons or more for a small group. Use a fine sand or gravel substrate with leaf litter, driftwood, and caves (e.g., coconut shells or clay pots) for hiding and spawning. Include robust plants (e.g., Anubias, Java Fern) for cover. Dim lighting mimics their shaded natural habitat.
Compatible with peaceful nano fish like small tetras, rasboras, or Corydoras catfish. Safe with larger shrimp (e.g., Amano Shrimp) in planted tanks, though shrimplets may be eaten. Avoid aggressive cichlids or fin-nipping fish that may stress them.
